Brief History and Present Information: -
English being a compulsory subject, the department came into being with the inception of the college in 1961. Though the department has the onerous task of managing the compulsory paper in English of all students admitted in B. A., B. Sc. and B. Com (Part I) apart from B. A. in Elective English, it could not yet introduce Major course in English because of the lack of interest of students in the discipline of English. Most of them have their schooling in Bāngla medium. Again, owing to the slow recruitment policy of State Government, the department had to go without permanent faculty for a considerable length of time, the affairs having then been managed by the Guest Faculty. With the joining of a new faculty member against permanent vacancy, the Department now plans to introduce Major/Honours in English apart from conducting an add-on course on ‘Communicative English’ since September 2015. The department has also initiated process to introduce another add-on course in Tourism Management in consultation with Department of Tourism, Government of West Bengal.
